Oh, The Money

You have heard the whispers, and perhaps even the false accusations, that foster parents are in it for the money. These people couldn’t be further from the truth, right? We both know this to be true: it can be financially straining and even stressful when taking care of foster children. There are those times when the needs of our children from foster care can be rather expensive, causing further strain on our financial well-being. To be sure, foster parents are reimbursed for many things. Yet, if you are like me, my wife and I spend a great deal of our own money on the children when they come into our home. Food, additional clothing, soccer games, music competitions, gas in the car as we run the children to and from visitations, doctor’s appointments and other activities. Along with that, there are birthdays, holidays, and other special events. To be sure, many agencies do give foster parents some financial assistance with these events. Yet, many times, this type of aid, or reimbursement, does not cover the costs of making a birthday, holiday, or a special event just that: special. These all add up, and place a strain on our own wallets. That can surely bring discussions of money between you and your spouse, discussions that can add even more stress.
